Murals — The Ancient Market of Tlaxcala
January 12, 2009The Government Place on the Zócalo of Tlaxcala has some very important murals that are probably missed by many casual tourists, BUT this “Genuine Tourist” found them (thanks to guide Robert Cox), and this is my story . . .
The ancient market of Tlaxcala was NOT in the downtown centro of Tlaxcala, Tlaxcala, but rather on the hillside above the present day city. The ancient market was a meeting place for all peoples, kings and subjects. (click on photos to enlarge them)
RELIABLE and ACCURATE “photo” of the four regional Kings in the market (below)
Here are some more ACCURATE “photos” of ancient market people engaged with one another (reproduced from original pictures not destroyed by the invaders).
In modern times, the Market has been moved down the hill and closer to the center of the city, near the river. The “Kings” are gone, but people are still very friendly and, of course, still trying to make “a buck.”
I said in the prologue that “this is my story” because our residence in Tlaxcala is located between the ancient market and the modern market, AND it is likely that the ruins of the ancient market extend underneath our residence. We look forward to returning Tlaxcala in just 9 days and “taking up residence” ON the ancient market and shopping in the modern market. I simply wonder, “Where is a King when you need one?” especially in these times
Stephen, a “Genuine Tourist,” reporting from Baraboo, WI, as the temperature drops to 20 below zero or more this evening
